The major alterations date from 1863–4 when the new transept was made part of the body of the church by the insertion of a two-bay neo-Norman arcade and the sanctuary was separated from the nave by the erection of a three-bay neo-Norman arcade. The altar was provided with neo-Norman rails and a neo-Norman pulpit and reading desk was placed on the south-west side of the new arcade. New seating was provided by open benches, but still arranged in three blocks without a central passageway. This is an exceptionally late date for a town church to be refurnished in such a pre-ecclesiological manner.
