Chapter 9 is a conclusion which draws some themes together, both around the anthropology of political movements and the politics of southern Europe. We shall go back to the question of identity and narratives, and to the way, for example, that an over-arching discourse of class or nation ‘speaks to’ the experience of people in local settings. There are also interesting parallels in these movements which derive from the politics of polarisation. However, I think that the most interesting result of bringing this material together is the possibility it offers to ask questions about the process of modernisation, and the concept of modernity.

Manovali were hired not for their trade or ‘quality’, but for their unspecific and undifferentiated working capacity; what mattered was their numbers. They were the masses. They were hired at the factory gate, often simply on the basis of their physical size. The distinction between skilled and unskilled, which we have used as a shorthand, does not convey the distinction between somebody who had a mestiere and someone who was a manovale. The distinction was not essentially one of greater ability, or capacity to command higher wages; it was between two radically different practices and conceptions of work and the person.

The chapter then discusses the political strategies of the dominant groups which emerged in the late 1980s, and the reactions of the ‘international community’ to the collapse of communism. The most general issue raised by the chapter is once again the problem of ethnicity, but it emerges out of an examination of the way in which the term has been employed by political commentators and the media as an explanation of violence in the Balkans. Chapter 8 returns to general questions about nationalism, and pulls together the case material on nation-building – as a political process, as social transformation, and as a cultural framework.
