Almost half of all port state inspections are carried out on ships flying the flag of one of the region states. Under the existing information system, daily reports of inspections undertaken should be sent to the computer centre of the region which is based at Saint Malo. Most of the countries now have a terminal connection with the centre while others still enter their information by telex. The Ministers noted the importance of future developments of the system to achieve a greater efficiency in the selection of ships to be inspected, thus avoiding duplication of inspections.

Section 2 of the Prevention of Oil Pollution Act of 1971 is amended accordingly and Regulations 12 and 13 of the Merchant Shipping (prevention of oil pollution) Regulations 1983 (control of discharge of oil by ships) SI 1398/1983 are repealed. 3 Other Legislation The Merchant Shipping (Light Dues) (Amendment) Regulations 1986 (SI 334/1986) which came into operation in April 1986, provide for an increase of about 5 per cent in the scale of light dues payable under the Merchant Shipping (Mercantile Marine Fund) Act 1898 as set out in the Merchant Shipping (Light Dues) Regulations 1981 (as amended) and revokes previous amended regulations.
