Any decision to remove the offending part of the tie from the inner leaf must be based on the evidence of damage through corrosion, compared with the possible internal damage to decoration. Other causes of a wall tie failure could be damp penetration caused by porous brickwork, or poor or chemically aggressive mortar.
In these cases the brickwork should be taken back about 1 • 5 m from the corner and rebuilt with vertical movement joints on each face. Usually it will be found that the concrete upstand has also cracked, and, provided the member is not a spanning upstand beam, consideration must also be given to jointing this member. A / . . , .
