5 TIME AND FREQUENCY ESTIMATION SYSTEMS Often, either time or frequency is the unknown quantity to be estimated. Typical test signals with spectral spreading are the time synchronization bursts defined in the mobile radio standard GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). Typical signals with temporal spreading are the frequency correction bursts defined in GSM. A straightforward implementation of the time and frequency estimator in the system structure shown in Fig. 4 would be a bank of matched filters and a maximum discriminator.

We see the required SNR depending on the bandwidth luxury B / B min , where normalization is performed with respect to the SNRs required by the reference system. The dotted curves are valid for the spread spectrum approach and the solid curves for FEe. 1'b' represents the required normalized SNR per bit for broadband Gaussian interferers, and "/' represents the required ratio of the received desired and interfering powers for bandlimited interferers. It becomes evident from Fig. 10 that the spread spectrum approach is only effective against the bandlimited interferer, and that the FEe approach utilizes bandwidth luxury more efficiently to suppress interference.
