The most general issue raised by the chapter is once again the problem of ethnicity, but it emerges out of an examination of the way in which the term has been employed by political commentators and the media as an explanation of violence in the Balkans. Chapter 8 returns to general questions about nationalism, and pulls together the case material on nation-building – as a political process, as social transformation, and as a cultural framework.
