There are various ways in which the materialist could try to meet this challenge. At the most general level, however, he could object to the assumption that an analysis is required of what it is for something to have a quality, and that this analysis must proceed by way of the idea of a support. Berkeley himself provides an implicit justification for this second point, namely, that use of the term ‘support’ in this context encourages one to think that the relation between a substance and its qualities is like that which exists between a pillar and the building it supports.

Nietzsche’s arguments, like those of Berkeley, are premised upon two insights. The first insight is that our capacity for knowledge and truth is bound up essentially with the perspective by means of which the world is rendered accessible to us. The second is that this capacity is undermined if the world in question turns out to be a world of mere appearance. Berkeley’s way of giving expression to these insights is to insist that we stay within the realm which is revealed in our ideas, and to warn of the sceptical and unnecessary difficulties we face if tempted to call into question the objective status of this realm.

Berkeley, however, does not uphold this distinction. On the contrary, he makes it quite clear that the things which are to be set apart from God are groupings of sensible qualities, and that the only substance of which we can speak A philosophical syndrome 27 meaningfully is immaterial substance. On this way of thinking then, the question of how we are to comprehend the God/world relation is absolutely central to that of how we are to comprehend the substance/quality relation. And once it is insisted – as Berkeley seems to be insisting – that God is to be dualistically opposed to the world, then it follows that He can play a causal role with respect to the unified-ness of things only at the cost of introducing a position which has it that the sensible qualities we perceive are unified by reference to something which is to be dualistically opposed to them.
